Florida Homestead Exemption

Eligible homeowners are not entitled to the valuable tax-saving protections of the "Save Our Homes" Amendment unless they first successfully file for a Homestead Exemption.

The "Save Our Homes" protection guarantees that the assessed value of a Homesteaded residence can increase by no more than 3% a year, regardless of how much more the property increases in actual market value. The more your property increases in value, the more you will save each year in taxes on a homesteaded property. This ensures that residents cannot be taxed out of their homes by skyrocketing property values.

The bottom line: Filing for Homestead can save you up to $580 each year in taxes...and the average Broward County homeowner will save approximately $2,000 more each year because of the "Save Our Homes" protection.

The traditional time for filing new Homestead Exemption applications runs from January 1st to March 1st each year. Avoid the driving, skip the parking headaches and cut to the front of the crowded lines by filing for Homestead online at www.bcpa.net.

Over 8,000 homeowners successfully used the online system in 2004 and the average taxpayer was able to complete the entire application process in just 15 minutes. The questions are asked in simple English. Just type in your answers and, at the end of "the interview", you'll have a perfectly completed application ready to print and mail in.
